I hope everyone has had a great start to June. As you take your family vacations, please think about safety and security. I have found some links that contain useful information about securing your home: Link1 Link2, Please take a moment to review would could happen while you are gone! You can also put your mail on hold by visiting this LINK. Some of my own tips:
1) Unplug garage door opener and lock garage door (remove keys, door openers and identifying information from cars parked outside).
2) Invest in light timers.
3) Stop all mail
4) Do not use automated e-mail messages telling the world you are on vacation!
5) Turn off water sources to appliances/toilets (shut valve on toilets, turn off water to washer, dryer and fridge).
6) Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your house and pick up all newspapers/advertisements and also leave an emergency contact number for you.
7) Let your alarm company know who to call in case of an emergency. Take the time to update your contact information with them and the Police Department (You must have a permit on file for your alarm)
8) Make sure your insurance is up-to-date and you have a current inventory in a safe place.
9) Store and secure valuables.
On another note, I will send out information about our upcoming City Council run-off election in the next newsletter. Please take a moment and vote!
June is turning out to be a great family month in Frisco. Two events will begin tonight: Frisco Grooves and Movies in the Square. These are both great events for the family and not to be missed (and, FREE to boot!). Field of Dreams is the movie that will be shown at Movies in the Square and Beatlegras is the band that is performing at Warren Sports Complex. I hope everyone has a great time!
I have received many questions about the water restrictions and the request that we should remove them. Please see the agenda item below and you will note that the Frisco City Council will consider this question at the next meeting. For the record, I do favor modifying the restrictions and going to a voluntary stage 3 or stage 2. However, here are some quick responses to recent e-mails I have received:
Comment: Frisco is only keeping the restrictions because they are making tons of revenue with the $25 fines to pay for the new City Hall.
Answer: That is a nice thought, but the reality is that Frisco has lost revenue because the water restrictions are working. Our citizens, from June 1, 2006 when Stage 3 started through December 31, 2006, saved over 1.6 Billion Gallons of water (and, thus, the associated revenue). It is questionable if the revenue from the fines even cover the cost of administrating the program and paying for the free water audits we provide the citizens. This is not a revenue question but a question about conserving our resources.
Comment: Lake Lavon is full, we no longer need to conserve water.
Answer: Lake Lavon is just one component of the water restrictions. Water Rights in Texas are a very tricky issue. The City of Dallas came very close to being penalized with the rejection of new reservoirs because of their per-capita usage of water. The State looks at conservation efforts when granting new reservoir rights. This makes sense since the creation of new reservoirs removes "x" amount of run-off for downstream cities who may use much less water. Also, this is Texas. While we are getting a good amount of rainfall right now, summer is coming! The good news is that two water sources will come on line later this year or early next year that will nearly double the water supply for North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD). The District serves about 1.6 million people in several counties and Frisco is one of 13 member cities and many more customer cities. Also, in this legislative session, SB3 was passed and sent to the governor. While I am not 100% up to speed on what it actually means to us, it does have additional provisions about water conservation and downstream impact of new reservoirs.
I hope everyone enjoys their summer and I am looking forward to hearing your comments!
The Community Calendar is now fully operational! You can view it on my web site or directly at the calendar web site. You can also make your own additions (subject to review), so if you know of any community events, feel free to add them!
